The walking course in Tokyo vol.2, Nihon-bashi area, Tokyo, Japan
The Nihon-bashi area is the most historic commercial area in
Tokyo. There had been a lot of brands or boutiques which have been run through
for four hundred years in this small street. The brands or boutique had been
kept the original place and original products. Ginza area where has the one
hundred and fifty year old town, was known as the shopping area for the foreign
tourists. In this Nihon-bashi area, they sell very traditional Japanese foods,
sweets or instrument in each boutique or shops.
The Ninnben sell the ingredient for Dashi soup stock. The smell of
the soup was filled in the shop area. Japanese customers will remind the Miso
soup at their childhood morning.
The Kiya is famous as the Japanese knives and cooking instruments
brand. They sell the original Houchou (cooking knives) in this boutique, one of
the most popular products in foreign tourists in Japan. They also explain how
to keep the shape and sharpness of Houchou.
The Gohuku boutique Echigo-ya selling Kimono or clothes was
restarted as the department store named Mitsukoshi. In this article, I would
like to explain about this department store building. Would you remember how
many department stores have the historic and artistic signature stuff in them?
The escalator in Harrods, the iron arches hall in Gallarie Raffiett, the main
hall of Bon marche etc.
The building was built with the Renaissance style architecture in
1935. There were several signature places in this department store.
The first one was the statue of Magokoro --- the goodness of
Sincerity ---. In the centre, you will find the beautiful goodness in the
clouds. The Phoenix were flying around her. The statue gives luxury atmosphere
in the main hall.
The second one was the statue of lions. These statue were seen the
replica in all Mitsukoshi department entrance. The lions were motived the lion
in the Trafalgar Square in London. As the legend known in the high school
pupils, if you can climb to the back of lion without other eyes, you can get
success in the examination of the university admission.

The Yasuda lecture hall
On coming through the main gate, the huge clock tower and lecture hall has faced to us. This building is Yasuda hall. The hall was very famous on the campaign against the Japan‐U.S. Security Treaty on 1969. The lecture hall was half circle and the beautiful lumps were hung in the centre of the hall. The balcony shaped round give the beautifully atmosphere.
There are a lot of old building belong to the departments. Each building was placed in the nice distances each other. All building were designed by different architect but were likely unified motif and design in this campus. The brick walls of the building were reflexed sunshine beautifully.
The galleries were beautiful spot in this campus. The lovely arched roof and constricted designs remind us these buildings were for the academic persons. The students and lecturers were pass through with faces like monk.
Autumn is the best season to visit this university. Ginkgo trees were planted along the street and the centre of the places. The leaf of Ginkgo is the symbol of this university. Late November, the leaves will change to yellow and the contrast of the leaves and brown bricks wall were lovely.
