On the occasion of 70th "that day"

No comments :

"That day" had come again.

The mid-summer heat in Tokyo reminds me the school day of Nagasaki in the summer vacation on my teenage, twenty years ago. Every August, I cannot help but think about the national security and peace of Japan.

"That day" for Nagasaki

On “That day”, the pupils in Nagasaki prefecture were gathered in the auditorium without air conditioner. We heard the cicada chirping outside and had felt sweltering of the auditorium during listening to what Nagasaki city had on that day and how bloody American had done as one atomic bomb were exploded to kill the seventy thousand citizens. I felt that the sadness of the atomic bomb was amplified with the sound of cicada and the sweltering hot.

Peace education had very political message

The education at the primary school in Nagasaki was including “peace education.” But I have never learned about the definition of “peace” by our teachers who just thought “peace” is the antonym of war. The education was dominated by the context of the historical perspective of the Japan Teachers Union which stands Anti- America, Anti- Japanese military, Anti- Japanese government and sympathy to Chinese communist party and Workers’ party of Korea. As the part of “peace education” the pupils were gathered for the purpose they imprinting that military system is evil and US is evil, on this school day on 9th August.

Foreign affair and "That day"

The discussion about the national security has frozen on this August. The opponents against the collective defence were giving up thinking on hearing the word of “military.” The supporters have faced on the strict on revision of the written constitution which had never been revised for seventy years. The education and tendency that the left media and the Unions spread propaganda against the military had stopped Japanese to think about the national security. All citizen of Japan will hope peace as the Constitution of Japan said the world peace, but the governor and the opposition are not able to explain how we can keep the peace in Asia where the government of Mainland China and Korea show the expansionism and imperialism.

We must not do as the Tragedy through Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima over again. We should not stop our discussion about the national security for our peace.

Hotel Okura Tokyo, The Lobby, the report about traditional Japanese design in the modern hotel vol. 3, Tokyo, Japan

The signature view of Hotel Okura Tokyo

On this article, I would like to describe about the design of the Lobby of Hotel Okura Tokyo. There is an essence of the design of Hotel Okura Tokyo main building. Light, furniture, lantern, construction of the lobby, Ikebana, time of day and staffs play very important roles at this lobby.

The Light is the most important part of this lobby. There are inside light from the lantern and outside light from sunshine. On the daytime, the light from lantern is modest under the sunshine coming through the shoji window. In the evening, the lights from lanterns come into the major role of lighting but cast the soft light on the persons. This view was written as Junichiro Tanizaki`s “In Praise of Shadows” in the modern building. The sun light will also change by season, time of the day or weather. We can have different view at this not large place.

Furniture and lantern of this lobby will welcome to us with the comfortable sofa and lighting. The circle lower table and sofa will make the simple but very haimish atmosphere at the lobby. The Japanese will feel as staying the comfortable sitting room of their house.

The construction of the lobby is well thought out. The height of the roof, connecting corridor and the main lobby space which come down by one step will produce the atmosphere of Japanese traditional verandah space; we call that Engawa in Japanese. On the view from the entrance, we can find the depth of the space but will feel the oppression from the connecting corridor coming from the 6th floor. After passing through the corridor, we will get the huge view of wall-full Shoji view which the corridor had obstructed in high roof main sitting space.
From this picture, you can find the corridor across the photo obstruct our view through the depth.

I would like you to compare the difference of the light at the lobby. The left one was taken on the evening, the right one was taken on the noon. Though the view points were different, you will find which part of the interior will emphasise.

Hotel Okura Tokyo, Japanese Brocade patchwork,Ball room, the report about traditional Japanese design in the modern hotel, vol.2 Tokyo, Japan

The modern Japanese patchwork to meet the ancient old cloths

The Brocade cloth was very important products in Far East and south eastern Asia. Some designs as the fight scene with lion were originally come from Ancient Persian dynasty coming through the Silk Road. A lot of designs were woven with gold or silver thread to produce the luxury cloth.
In Japanese Kimono style, the ladies put on an obi which was woven by the technique of Brocade. Obi is the straight, 3.6 meter cloth tied as belt. The contrast between Kimono and Obi is a tradition in Japaneese culture.
From this patchwork, you will find the coordination (Awase in Japanese) of colour in Kimono and Obi, which is the most important part on wearing Kimono. The colour, pattern or design of the cloth will be necessary to coordinate the Kimono.
You can enjoy the whole of the patchwork and also any part of that. The colour and pattern of the cloth will nicely match each other.

the centre part colour like brown is originated from the cloth at Horyuji temple.
